Why Not . . . Be A Good House Guest? Part Deux

Welcoming invited guests into your home can be a wonderful experience if the guests keep in mind the efforts of their host(s) and are appreciative of such a gracious offer.  Last week, I shared a list of things to keep in mind prior to and upon arrival, so this week I’d like to share tips on how to be a delightful house guest.

Let’s get started.

1. Be Presentable

Be sure to pack a set of presentable pajamas (top and bottom) that will be sure to make everyone comfortable even in the early hours of the morning while you are sipping coffee, as well as taking a moment to brush through your hair and any other tidying up that you may want to tend to before saying good morning.

2. Be Neat & Orderly

Whether you’ve been given your own room, but especially if you are sleeping on someone’s couch, each morning be sure to tidy up your living space, tucking, folding and putting away anything that otherwise wouldn’t have been there.  Your host will appreciate your attention to something so simple as it is a way to show respect and gratitude.

3. Make Your Bed

Similar to No. 2, make your bed every morning as you would at your own home. A simple luxury to come back to at the end of each day is a welcoming boudoir.

4. If Contagious, Stay Home.

5. Offer to Purchase Groceries or Pay for Partial Utilities for Extended Visits

If your host will be making meals for you or you will be eating breakfast, lunch and/or dinner in their home, offer to pay for or shop for groceries. And if you are staying for an extended period, be sure to offer money as a form of rent for utilities and space used.

6. Limit Internet/phone Usage

If you don’t have your own access to internet and will be using your host’s computer, be very brief and keep in mind that others will want to go about their daily routines and spend time on the internet as well.  And while everyone has a cell phone these days, be aware of when and how often you are on the phone. Remember that you are a guest and not the only one in the home.

7. Do Your Own Laundry/Dishes

I suggested last week that one of the simplest ways to thank your host is to offer to do the dishes after a meal. Another thing to always get into the habit of is washing and putting your dishes in the dishwasher as well. Never assume that someone else will be doing this job.

8. Strip the Bed and Any Towels Used

Prior to leaving when you are packing up and saying good-byes, take a few minutes and strip the bed placing all of the sheets into one of the pillowcases. This is a simple task that will save your host some time and be neat as well. Be sure to add any towels and washcloths also that you have used.

9. Send a Prompt Thank You Note

Be sure to put it at the top of your to do list (or better yet, while on your trip purchase a lovely thank you card in an inviting stationery store) to send a thank you note to your host upon arriving back home. While many thank yous have most likely been exchanged, a formal letter expresses sincere gratitude and thoughtfulness and puts a wonderful last memory to the entire stay.

Being a good house guest simply requires conscious effort of putting ourselves into the shoes of our host and treating them the way we would hope others would treat us if they were staying at our home. The goal is to create a memorable experience for everyone and while the host will keep themselves busy making sure this happens, so too should the guest.

The Weekend

What a wonderful week it has been, earning a few days of relaxing, playing each moment by ear and simply enjoying the first weekend of the year.  I look forward to easing into my Saturday with a late morning yoga class, followed by an opportunity to sit down and watch a new episode of Barefoot Contessa. New books and magazines have landed in my mailbox, so I will be pleasantly inundated with endless reading. One of the books I am eagerly devouring at the moment and will be reviewing this coming Tuesday, looks to be a book simply luxurious life readers will find very fitting for their lives and I look forward to sharing it with you soon. (Currently, I have underlines and exclamation points everywhere – all for very good reasons.)

I would like to thank all of my readers this week for making this one of the best weeks to begin a new year that I’ve had personally and as a blogger.  Thank you for visiting The Simply Luxurious Life, tweeting about posts, taking time to communicate with me (whether it be via email, Twitter or by leaving your thoughts as a comment) and, if you’ve only just found the blog, for following, subscribing or simply just saying hello.  Your friendliness and cheerfulness as we all step out and begin determined to make 2011 a year that will be even better than we had hoped is what I enjoy about my readers. Being surrounded by optimistic, hopeful people is a very powerful thing.  So thank you very much.

Also, if you haven’t stopped by Cara of Lilac and Grey this week, be sure to visit.  I want to thank her for inviting me to write a guest blog with her readers entitled A Beautiful Opportunity  which focuses on one my favorite quotes from Anne Shirley of the novel Anne of Green Gables as we all continue further in 2011.

On Friday, a very gracious blogger, Julie of Brown Eyed Belle, wrote a wonderful review on the quarterly newsletter that just went out on January 1st – Creating A Simply Luxurious Life, and I can’t thank her enough. Do stop by and view her pairing of exquisite photos, fun tunes and eloquently written post.

Speaking of newsletters, the first weekly newsletter of the year was sent out yesterday.  Here’s a preview to see if you too would like to subscribe.

I hope you are already immersed in a magnificent weekend and I will see you on Monday. Bon jour!

Thursday Treasures

Each week truly does take on a speed of its own.  Some start out quick and relentlessly demanding oodles of time, others slowly wake up to what turns out to be something very fulfilling and productive.  This week has most certainly been the latter, and what has made it so fulfilling has been my readers.  Whether it is your honest and lovely stories that you share (how you found your purpose/passion) or making very forthright observations about your lives which leave me nodding my head in agreement because I can completely relate and empathize, I am so appreciative for the time you take to comment.

One of the main reasons I began this blog is to shed some light/support/guidance for anyone who wonders if it might be asking too much to want a simply luxurious life (what a beautiful thing attain). My wish is to provide reassurance that that you’re desire to want a life more fulfilling, filled with more love, quality and time to enjoy things or your choices, is something that should be honored and most certainly pursued.  And in reading your comments, I find validation that so many of you want a life, of your own design, that is beautiful, luxurious, full, at times complicated, but more importantly yours and not anyone else’s which by definition makes it uniquely special.  So thank you. My readers are most definitely one of my treasures this week and every week.

Short and Sweet

A little bit of sun, a little bit of rain, oh, and don’t forget the thunder and lightning.  The weather is still making up its mind as to how it wants to play its cards, but I am already en route to my destination – a tremendous thank you.  This week I owe so much to my readers, fellow bloggers and editors for such kind and thoughtful comments, helpful advice and being willing to take a chance on me.  I am so grateful.

I am doing a bit of celebrating this weekend and clearing my planner of any obligations that don’t involve laughter, love and luxury.  I hope your weekend plans are fantastic as well.  I would love to hear about them.

Beginning Tuesday, you will be able to subscribe to The Simply Luxurious Life’s weekly newsletter which will be filled with all of the luxuries you already have come to know and love and a few extras (more details on Monday). This past week has been fun, fashionable and filled with a giveaway announcement (congratulations Mary!).  Have a look at what you might have missed.

A Humble Thank You – Links a la Mode

Jennine Jacob of The Coveted (recently ranked 80 on a list of the 99 most influential fashion blogs on Style 99) and founder of the Independent Fashion Bloggers community compiles weekly a list of fashion posts that center around a chosen theme.  This week Debutante Clothing edited the Links à la Mode which revolved around the topic - The Business and Beauty of Style.

I want to express a HUGE thank you for being included and mentioned on this particular week’s round-up of posts.  Along with Simply Luxurious, the lovely list also includes some fantastic blogs, and they are all included below.  If you would like to see the entire post, click here.

Again, my Friday has been made ten times over!  Thank you so much.
