Why Not . . . Savor the Last Days of Summer?

Unofficially summer is coming to a close after the long Labor Day weekend or Bank Holiday depending upon where you live, but there is still so many moments to savor and bask in before the season is behind us until next year.

I don’t know about you, but while I am not a fan of extreme heat, as soon as the evening temperatures drop 15 degrees or so on a somewhat consistent basis, I am certain that fall is fast approaching.  And while I adore the season that sheds the recent past to begin making way for the new, I longingly wish I had taken the time to drink up some of my favorite summer pastimes just one more time.

So this time, no longingly looking back, let’s all soak up summer, every last ounce so that as we begin to enter into fall we do so with a light, yet certain step.

Here are a few ways you might want to savor the last days of summer:

1. Revel in a tomato plucked straight from the vine

2. Root, root for the home team – take in a baseball game

3. Don a pair of stylish shorts with a stunning silk blouse

4. Luxuriate in a book from beginning to end – let go of time

5. Kabobs!

6. Early morning walks with the sunrise

7. Breathe in the sweet scent of fresh basil

8. Treat yourself to a bright, playful pedicure

9. Bare some shoulder

10. Slowly nibble on a waffle cone filled with ice cream

11. Relax enjoying warm summer evenings

12. Watch the last tennis grand slam of the season (for either the tennis or simply gawking at Nadal)

13. Read one more book for pleasure before fall’s list of best-sellers calls your name

14. Leave the windows open while you slumber

15. Hang the sheets out to be sun-kissed

16. Fire up the barbeque and pour a microbrew or a glass of scrumptious viognier

17. Dine al fresco

18. Run through the sprinklers

19. Leave the shoes at home and take a walk through the sand

20. Make fresh lavender lemonade

21. Schedule a date for dinner followed by a drive-in movie (bring along the dessert and wine while you watch). Cuddling encouraged!

22. Mix up a pitcher of sangria

23. Grab a friend and take a leisurely bike ride.

24. Listen to the waves of the ocean and get lost in their rhythm

25. A cobbler full of fresh berries from the farmer’s market

26. Take one last dip

27. Picnic anyone? How about a baguette, brie, some grapes to nosh on and a glass of wine?

How to Love an American Man – Book Review

Whether or not you choose to love an American man, I highly recommend Kristine Gasbarre’s memoir titled quite simply How to Love an American Man, about a woman in her late twenties who engages in one of the sincerest dialogues with her recently widowed grandmother to unearth the secrets of their 60 year marriage.

An independent woman who lived in New York City, then lived in Milan, Kristine epitomizes the freedom women can obtain all on their own in today’s world.  However, the love of her life is something she has still to find and very much is seeking.

Returning to live in her small hometown with her family after her beloved grandfather’s death, she provides comfort to her mourning grandmother who while clearly very strong is learning how to live a new life with a broken heart due to the loss of her life partner.

The book reads like a fictional book as its protagonist’s inner thoughts take us through the highs of meeting the bachelor that her hometown can’t seem to get enough of and the heart wrenching moments of frustration as she witnesses her grandmother adjusting to her new life.

Initially I was drawn to this book after reading a review of it in The Huffington Post, but then I became weary that it would be about how to “get a man” (as the title directly suggests) which is something that isn’t healthy in any form as it requires the woman to adapt and change who she is. So after reading the first chapter and nearly bawling in public as I did so (my Twitter followers can attest), I read a bit trepidatiously.

However, I was more than pleasantly thrilled that the title is purposely misleading because as Kristine comes to discover through her own experience as she applies her grandmother’s beyond traditional wisdom is that the way to love an American man is to to be “a woman who has goals, who knows herself and what she wants.”

My question to Kristine now is, so how it did all work out? I wonder if she’ll ever share, but then that wouldn’t be the modern woman’s way . . .

Needless to say, it is destined to be a huge success, as Hollywood actresses are already clamoring for the lead role. With such a basic, yet innately ideal title, it’s hard not to want to at least pick up the book and find out more.  Trust me though, it is well worth the few dollars to take the book home and savor.

11 Steps to a Fresh Start

"Happy are those who dream dreams and are ready to pay the price to make them come true." ~ Leon J. Suenes

While the January is often accepted as the time of year to make a fresh start, I also immediately equate the beginning of school in the fall, or simply the ending of summer as a great opportunity to make positive changes.

However, while there may be changes we want, that doesn’t mean they will just magically appear.  Changes aren’t like Santa Claus when we were younger, wishing doesn’t just make it happen, but writing our wishes down certainly is a start in the right direction.

Today I’d like to share with you a few ways to welcome permanent changes into your life. The changes you want to see occur could be in a variety of different areas of life – health, attitude, time management, job performance, finances, relationships, etc, but no matter what they are it will take discipline and a consistent approach to eliminate the old habits that haven’t worked and reconfigure new habits into your mind that you would like to become second nature. The good news is the change you want to see can and will happen if you follow these 11 steps. Let’s get started.

1. Let go of what didn’t work – past grievances, emotions, etc. However, letting go doesn’t mean you forget, but what it does allow you to do is move forward.

2. Be very clear about what you want to change. Write it down. Be concrete. For example, I will increase my monthly income by 5% by the end of the year. Then set about breaking down that goal into small steps. What are you going to change in your life to make that a reality?

3. Stick to a short list of things you want to change. Try to keep your list of changes/goals to three for the upcoming few months or at the longest, a year. By keeping your goal list short, you are better able to focus and accomplish what you intend to.

4. Learn from the mistakes and apply those lessons effectively. As mentioned in no. 1, letting go is imperative for a fresh start, but the key is to learn the lesson and apply it so that in moving forward we make positive strides in the right direction.

5. Talk to an objective party. Often there may be things in your past that you aren’t quite sure how to change, but desperately want to.  I highly suggest talking to someone who isn’t bias and is simply able to give objective advice.  This could be a counselor or a mentor, but make sure it is someone you trust. Allow yourself to just listen and digest their advice. Some you may use and some you may not, but it is always best just to listen once you’ve shared your scenario.

6. Understand the reason for each of the changes you want to make. If you are trying to eat healthier and perhaps drop a few pounds, remind yourself of how you want to feel by treating your body with better care.

7. Remain committed. To truly change habits and let go of things that were not helping you progress toward your goals, will require time – approximately 3 weeks or 11-14 times of what ever the new habit is to make it an engrained thought.  So be patient with yourself.

8. Strive for excellence, push aside perfection. You will make a few missteps along the way, but file them as opportunities to learn and don’t stop. Do your best and then push a little further.  You’ll be surprised what you are actually capable of.

9. Positive self talk is mandatory. Remember to surround yourself with optimism – whether it be the people who support your choices, affirmations you’ve written down and posted in your house, journal or planner, or most importantly, the self-talk that is constantly going on in your head – keep it positive. If you wouldn’t want to hear such negativity from somebody else, don’t allow the voice in your head to bad mouth you either.

10. Give it 24 hours.  There will be days where your mood is just not where you’d like it to be and the hope and determination you had at the beginning is waning. I can honestly say that it seems in this moment that nothing will help, but trust me – give it a day. We all have funks when for whatever reason, we just aren’t feeling it. Give yourself 24 hours and pick up the cause again tomorrow. Don’t stop believing in yourself and give yourself a bit of a break (but not too much).

11. Let yourself dance around the living room. What do I mean by this?  You know those moments that occur that you didn’t expect would go so well but they do and sometimes better than you expected? And while nobody else would understand how thrilled you are, this is no reason not to celebrate.  Whether it’s dancing around the living room, letting out a YAHOO!! even if your pets look at you kind of funny, do it.  Be happy and celebrate the change that is gradually becoming the new you and the new life you had designed.

The Weekend . . .

For me, this is the last weekend before I am headed back into the classroom. As I reflect on this past summer, I look back at all the bliss, items checked off my to-do list and new faces I have had the fortunate opportunity to meet, and beam because it has been a fantastic summer. And while I am appreciative for what the summer has afforded me, I am striding forward as I glance back because I am thoroughly anxious for what the next season will bring.  I have high hopes, but why not. After all, unless we aim for the moon we can’t land among the stars.  So I am shooting for the galaxies and beyond and I hope you will be joining me as you seek your own dreams and goals as well.

This last weekend of August will be one that will also have me thinking of those of you on the east coast as you brace for Hurricane Irene.  You will all be in my thoughts – stay safe and I look forward to talking after it has passed and all reports are positive.

A handful of the posts this week revolved around the theme of work as many of our schedules will be quickening in their pace and knowing how to balance the many aspects of our lives will determine our success and our level of sanity. Here’s a look back on the post from the past week on The Simply Luxurious Life:

A Meal By Itself – Risotto Primavera

There is something very comforting about making risotto I am finding – almost therapeutic as Ina Garten suggests in her taping of this particular episode. And for me it can be the entire meal for the evening. While this is meant to be a meal with spring vegetables (asparagus), I went ahead and made it to see how well it tasted even if those fresh spring ingredients aren’t available.  And I most certainly wasn’t disappointed.  The rich creaminess of the risotto is balanced beautifully with the fresh lemon flavor that lightens the dish just as much as it needs to be. In less than 30-40 minutes you will have a meal that will be filling and perfect to be paired with a glass of white wine. Enjoy!

Risotto Primavera
(adapted from Barefoot Contessa recipe) yield – 4 servings

Ingredients:
1½ tablespoons good olive oil
1½ tablespoons unsalted butter
1 small onion or 2-3 shallots
1½ cups Arborio rice
2/3 cup dry white wine
4 to 5 cups simmering chicken stock=
1 pound thin asparagus (if asparagus isn’t in season, the recipe is just as good without)
10 ounces frozen peas
1 tablespoon freshly grated lemon zest (2 lemons)
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
1/3 cup mascarpone cheese, preferably Italian
½ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese, plus extra for serving
3 tablespoons minced fresh chives, plus extra for serving

Directions:

1. Heat the olive oil and butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add the onions or shallots until tender or translucent. Add the rice and stir for a minute to coat with the vegetables, oil, and butter. Add the white wine and simmer over low heat, stirring constantly, until most of the wine has been absorbed. Add the chicken stock, 2 ladles at a time, stirring almost constantly and waiting for the stock to be absorbed before adding more. This process should take 25 to 30 minutes.

2. Meanwhile, cut the asparagus diagonally in 1½-inch lengths and discard the tough ends. Blanch in boiling salted water for 4 to 5 minutes, until al dente. Drain and cool immediately in ice water. (If using fresh peas, blanch them in boiling water for a few minutes until the starchiness is gone.)

3. When the risotto has been cooking for 15 minutes, drain the asparagus and add it to the risotto with the peas, lemon zest, 2 teaspoons salt, and 1 teaspoon pepper. Continue cooking and adding stock, stirring almost constantly, until the rice is tender but still firm.

Whisk the lemon juice and mascarpone together in a small bowl. When the risotto is done, turn off the heat and stir in the mascarpone mixture plus the Parmesan cheese and chives. Set aside off the heat for a few minutes, sprinkle with salt and pepper, and serve hot with a sprinkling of chives and more Parmesan cheese.

Style Inspiration

With summer ever so gradually making its way off the stage, many of the outfits I have pulled together today demonstrate that transition period we find ourselves in where the evenings begin to feel a tad chillier and the need for a cozy cardigan worn over a delicate chiffon top occur. While I’m not completely ready for summer to end, I must agree with Marie Claire’s Editor-in-Chief when she stated in her letter from the editor in the September issue, “Fall is the best time of year for type A’s like me.” With all of the gorgeous options available this season, enjoy weaning yourself off of your summer wardrobe by blending a few pieces with your new fall finds.

Why Not . . . Treat Your Body Like a Temple?

“Treat your body like a temple, not a woodshed. The mind and the body work together. Your body needs to be a good support system for the mind and the spirit. If you take good care of it, your body can take you wherever you want to go, with the power and the strength and energy and vitality you will need to get there.”

~ Jim Rohn

Viewing my body as a temple is something I have absolutely no problem doing, but treating it as such is much more difficult.  However, as I get older, I become more and more appreciative of what my body can do for me and because of this I am reminded of why – proper maintenance, regular attention and discipline - are so important.

So often is the case that during the warmer months it is easier to get outside and be active, but as the daylight hours slowly shorten and our schedules become ever more booked, it is too easy to allow our fitness and wellness to slide.

What I’d like to share with you today are ways to treat your body as the temple we all know it is that has the potential to allow us each to experience amazing opportunities. While initially when this statement is uttered, it is assumed exercise is involved, which is correct, it is also important to keep in mind all the other ways you can take care of your body. Here’s a list of ideas to get you started:

1. Take in productive fuel – eliminate/reduce processed foods and preservatives, monitor what type of media your mind observes – television, radio, music, reading material.

2. Just listen – to your body that is. Adhering to a rigid diet is not always going to serve your body’s needs. While your body may have become accustomed to too much sugar and this needs to be adjusted, it is also important to listen to it when it comes to knowing what it needs.  The difficult part comes into play when we have to translate what it’s saying.  However, with time you will come to realize when you think you are craving food, but actually are dehydrated and need water or when you need a touch of salt or a healthy sweet treat.  Take the time to listen and get to know your body and you will never be led astray.  This also comes into play with regards to knowing when you are full enough. Sometimes when we allow ourselves to reach the point of feeling as though we are starved and thus consume far more than we need.  The key is to slow down, make healthy choices and try not to allow your body to come to this point of desperation.

3. Let it rest – Make sure to give your body 6-9 hours of uninterrupted sleep.  Turn off the computer at least an hour before bedtime, eliminate distractions that will keep you awake, if pets make it impossible to sleep, designate a specific place in the house for them to snooze, and if you have children, be diligent about sticking to a consistent bedtime.

4. Challenge it – your body is capable of so much more than you realize. Create an aerobic fitness regimen and write it in ink in your planner. (Click here to find more ideas on how to get and stay in shape.)

5. Strengthen your bones – with weight training.  Now weight training can come in many different forms.  You can choose to use hand weights, bands or revert back to yoga as it is uses your own body weight for resistance. More than 25 million Americans have osteoporosis and the majority of these patients are women. The key to preventing it is to act now before menopause occurs (and for those of you who are post-menopausal, keep lifting to maintain what bone mass you currently have).  By building your bone mass now with exercise and strength training you are prolonging your ability to have strong bones well in your golden years.

6. More natural drinks – Do your best to drink water and tea instead of soda or coffee.  While it is fine to drink anything in moderation, remind yourself that your body is the vessel and ask the question, how best shall I fuel it? I don’t believe Coca Cola is going to get you very far, but some cool crisp water certainly can’t hurt.

7. Keep it limber – Whether you stretch five minutes before and after your aerobic activities or engage in pilates or yoga, make sure you are incorporating a regular stretching routine into your workout regimen. Not only is it good for the body, but it is soothing for the mind as well.

8. Keep the brain active – One of the simplest and most enjoyable preventative actions you can take to ward off Alzheimer’s and dementia is to continually challenge your mind.  Whether it be by introducing new physical skills – dancing, stand-up padding or tennis – or mental exercises such as crossword puzzles, learning a new language, reading a challenging new book or understanding a new computer system – by exercising your brain you are keeping it young and less susceptible to deterioration as well.

9. Protect and pamper your teeth, eyes and ears – A legitimate excuse to purchase those oversized sunglasses you’ve had your eye on and who doesn’t want fresh breath – simply brush your teeth twice a day, and as for your ears, gradually turn the volume down a few notches – your ears will thank you later.

10. Meditate – Did you know that the purpose of yoga is to prepare the mind for mediation? If you have ever taken a yoga class, you know how physically taxed you are at the end of the class, but additionally, so is your mind because you’ve been focusing so hard on trying to maintain your balance and listen to your body.  Because of this, immediately after the class ends or you are in the final pose savasana, your mind is more capable of meditating. Start with 5 minutes with either soothing music playing in the background or nothing at all and just let your mind rest. Focus on your breathing and you’ll be amazed at how de-stressing and soothing such a practice is when you incorporate it regularly into your life.

11. Be preventative – schedule regular doctor appointments and be sure to ask any and all questions of your physician.

12. Reduce stress – The more stress we have in our lives, the more damaging it is on our bodies (click here to read more about the effects of stress), so it is vital that we reduce anything that is within our control and a lot of it begins with our minds. Yoga instructor Kristin McGee wrote in a post this week a reminder that is something to always have at the back of your mind when it comes to conflict, “When a conflict comes up, I always try to remember to ask myself, is this ‘inside my boat or outside of my boat?’” So often we become engrossed and worried about things that we have absolutely no control over and thus expend energy we need for things we do have control over.  Keep this saying in mind whenever you find yourself in a stressful situation.

13. Cook more often – this requires planning, saves money and allows you to be an active participant in what you choose to put into each meal.

14. Protect your skin – Think Anne Hathaway, or at least think SPF 30 or above when it comes to skin protection. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in America and more than 2 million people are diagnosed with it every year. There are so many alternatives available now between self-tanners, spray tans, airbrush tans, and an endless barrage of skin protective lotions, it simply is ridiculous to be an ignorant sun worshiper.

These are just a handful of ways to treat your body like the temple it is.  Remember, consider your discipline as a down-payment on a healthy and active life down the line as well as in this moment.
