Four Seats Please

Recently, I had the opportunity, unexpectedly, to do a little wine tasting in the Walla Walla Valley wine region and while I’ve never had the luxury of being able to stop in during the middle of the week before, I found it to be, while quite different from my other experiences, more enjoyable than I could have ever imagined. 

The winery was calm, only a few potential buyers were tasting, and the staff was able to pay closer attention.  The hustle and bustle was absent which allowed for us to find an entire space arranged with plush armchairs, couches and side tables to rest our stems.

I quickly recognized one of the reasons why this arrangement of furniture was so welcoming to inducing conversation: one, we all had a extremely comfortable place to relax; two, we were close enough for an intimate conversation, but we weren’t on top of each other; and three, we had a little nudge by the handful of tastes of wine we had already enjoyed.

The gathering of four different pieces of furniture whether they be couches or chairs is such a conducive way of promoting exactly what one hopes for at a small dinner party at the house – lively conversation.  Whether it be before dinner is served and you are waiting for everyone to arrive over a glass of champagne or after dinner, with cups of coffee.

Double the Luxury

The luxury of having not just one sofa, but two in your living room has always been a dream of mine. The immediate creation of conversation and comfort, and so appealing to the eye at the same time is something that has always grabbed my attention. Gradually, as I have matured with age, becoming more comfortable in my own skin and realizing what is important, I’ve gravitated more toward removing the television and armoire from the living room and having the focus in the room being solely on the fireplace with ample seating for conversation and side tables, coffee tables and ottomans for drinks and nibbles.

Let’s Get Cozy

Comforting, a place to unwind, a place to put your feet up, a soft place to land – ideally these attributes would be found with someone special, but in today’s Rooms for Inspiration they are found with sofas.  An extra long sofa should be inviting, beckoning its inhabitants to partake in the leisure it can provide and maybe conjure up a few Z’s if you’re anything like me.  The sofa in my great room is used quite often on the weekends for a nap or two.  Add a blanket, some natural light and a quiet home, and I’m in dreamland.  However, it all must begin with the sofa.

Shall We Chat?

One of the things I treasure most is a good conversation with a friend in a cozy coffee shop, outside while the world is our entertainment or gathered in a welcoming living room.  As I begin to appreciate interior design more with each magazine or blog I gaze at, I’m realizing that reserving space in our homes for conversations, coffee, tea and relaxation without the clamor of the television is something that truly would be a luxury.

So as I continue to re-design my living room in my mind, I thought I’d share some welcoming images that are aching for a great conversation to transpire.  Won’t you join me?  Grab your drink of choice, pick the coziest chair or couch that is too your liking, and I’ll be all ears.
