My Appointment at Dream Dry

When I learned that the talented illustrator behind The Simply Luxurious Life logo, Inslee, had shared her skills with Rachel Zoe for her new blow-out salon in New York City Dream Dry, my interest was piqued to see exactly what the experience might be at this glamorous beauty destination. So when I had the opportunity to travel to New York City last month, I made an appointment.

Just a few block from the iconic Flatiron building, Dream Dry is located on West 21st Street, tucked along a quiet through street between 5th and 6th Avenues.

Booking an appointment is easy as you can do it all online. You can also purchase and send a gift certificate online if you have a certain someone who would love a surprise in her/his inbox from Rachel Zoe. With the standard blowout (wash, blow-out and style) priced at $40 (which is commensurate to The Dry Bar), in forty minutes you can walk out with the style you desire.

My style experience didn’t exceed my expectations; in fact, I could have done it at home, but part of the reason for scheduling a blow-out is to reduce the stress and sometimes struggle of doing your own hair. What did exceed my expectations however was the interior design and decor of the space.

Pristine white decor washed the entire business and was complemented with accents of black and chrome (if you book an appointment and are getting shampooed, look up and enjoy the large grouping of silver bubble pendants hanging from the ceiling to entertain your eyes as you begin to relax).

Last Wednesday on The Rachel Zoe Project, Robin Moraetes (co-founder of Dream Dry with Rachel Zoe) gave viewers a tour of the business as it opened its doors in February earlier this year. And it was the marble black and white chevron floor that I was most curious to see. I can attest that it is stunning as it runs throughout the entire establishment.

With a second location opening on 315 West 57th in NYC near Columbus Circle, one of the unique offerings that Dream Dry makes available is early bird appointments (beginning at 6:30 am) and late evening appointments (until 10pm on Thursdays and Friday and 9pm on Monday through Wednesday). Clients can also keep a dossier of the styles they received in order to remember what they might want again on a return visit.

So if you’d like to be pampered (enjoy a perusing a pre-loaded iPad with all the top fashion magazines issues while your stylist works their magic), don’t want to fuss with your hair and want to gaze on exquisite modern, chic, fabulous decor, treat yourself to an appointment.

While in New York City – Day Two

After a chaotic and unpredictable day of weather on Saturday, Sunday was the exact opposite – pleasant, beautiful and exactly what I've imagined on a brilliant sunny September day.

One of the many realizations I’ve discovered while drinking in all that I can possibly consume of New York City and having just seen two other amazing cities in a matter of weeks, is that each city is its own unique individual with strengths and opportunities for growth. New York is so utterly familiar even though I haven’t been here in years. The streets make sense when you’re walking from place to place, and the energy is intoxicating as everyone (even tourists) hustle up and down the streets.
As promised, let me take you through my second day in the city . . .

~Sunday is a perfect excuse for brunch no matter where you live, so while in New York City I made sure to take advantage and stop into one of the many fantastic brunch haunts. I had a wonderful first visit with Tiffani Rogers of Style by Tiffani at Sarabeth’s where we were fortunate to sit outside and bask in the morning sunshine and take in the view of Central Park South.~

~Then it was off to do a bit of shopping for luxurious essentials at Bloomingdale’s. Bergdorf Goodman’s was fabulous, beyond fabulous, but not in my budget this time around.~

~Time for my first fashion show of the trip where I hopped into a taxi to view Daniella Kallmeyer’s Spring 2013 collection on 31st street. Above was my favorite piece – a white leather pencil skirt. Click here to see all the images and the entire collection.~

~Famished, I decided to walk through Times Square, and then head to Grand Central Station to pick up a quick bite and enjoy a late lunch in Bryant Park which is just a few blocks away. If you look closely in the lower left-hand image, you can see the Chrysler building towering above Grand Central Station.~

~A perfect seat in Bryant Park (the previous location for Fashion Week). In the background you can see The Empire State building soaking in the Sunday sunshine along with all of the park goers.~

~Battery Park is on the same block as the New York Public Library. What a perfect pairing!~

~After a quick change of clothes, it was off to meet jewelry designer Michele Gramesty and founder of The Mish Dish at the rooftop lounge above The Peninsula Hotel. View from the rooftop of The Peninsula Hotel in the Salon de Ning on 55th and 5th, looking downtown 5th Avenue.~

While in New York City – Day One

On just a few hours of sleep, I dove into New York City early Saturday morning. With a brief stop at Dry Bar to receive a blow-out for the day, I then hopped into an Uber taxi cab that took me up to Lincoln Center. Even though it was raining freakishly hard combined with a blustery wind, it was Lincoln Center and the street style fashionistas lined the concourse hoping a photographer would discover their wardrobe talents. While my tickets are for shows tomorrow (Sunday), I enjoyed appreciating the effort the women and men put into their ensembles.

I briefly had to stop into Columbus Circle’s J.Crew and try a few things on (and dream about the leopard pumps above), but then it was on to enjoy the day as someone who hasn’t been in New York City for quite some time.

Nearly two years ago, I was reading Town & Country magazine, and I spotted a recommendation for a tucked away Italian restaurant behind MoMA. Having torn out the page, I saved it and was elated to discover this resturant Il Gattopardo is a beautiful, quaint lunch or dinner delight. With options to dine in the dining room or in the garden (which is a solarium), I chose the garden, as the rain gently tapped on the glass, I sipped a glass of white wine while enjoying their Risotto of the Day (seafood). The service, the atmosphere, and the location was ideal, as upon finishing my meal I stepped across the street to The Museum of Modern Art.

While one could certainly spend hours upon hours in such a museum, I headed directly to the 4th and 5th floors where Picasso, Seraut, Pollock, Monet, Modigliani and others are found, and let the time tick away. (Girl Before a Mirror by Pablo Picasso and Water Lilies by Claude Monet are seen in the image above.)

Needing a bit of exercise, I set out to find Laduree’s here in New York City and found it between 70th and 71st street on Madison Avenue on the upper east side. The line was long, but moved quickly, and I dashed out the door with a treat to enjoy after returning to my hotel through Central Park.

To my utter shock and excitement, I exited the park only to see street style star Miroslava Duma standing on 5th avenue taking her own pictures. I couldn’t get my camera out fast enough, but she is just as petite and lovely as you might imagine.

Needless to say, the first day was full of an abundance of experiences, revelations and pinch-myself moments. (Follow me on Twitter for in the moment updates and images shared throughout the day - @simplyluxurious)

Tomorrow begins with brunch with a fellow blogger I can’t wait to meet, my first official fashion show and more exploration. Stay tuned . . .

Leaving on a Jet Plane for NYC & NYFW!

New York Fashion Week is under way in New York City, and for the first time, The Simply Luxurious Life will be there. To explain precisely what this trip means wouldn’t do justice to how ecstatic, giddy and eager I am to arrive. After more than a year and half of planning, saving and dreaming, the reality of it all is about to happen.

With a handful of shows on my list to attend, opportunities to meet with fellow bloggers and others in the fashion industry, as well as simply enjoying New York City in the throes of late summer, I probably won’t realize it’s really happening until I arrive.

However, upon touching down, I will be keeping you informed and up-to-date of all the goings-on amongst the fashion hustle and bustle via pictures, tweets and posts. So this weekend do stop by as there will be no rest as long as there are fashion shows to discuss, street style to fawn over and fabulous stops to share.

~Even with a redeye flight, I’ll be running on adrenaline upon arrival.~

~With my hotel accommodations near Columbus Circle, Central Park South, and the center of the fashion festivities at Lincoln Center nearby, I’ll be in the middle of everything!~

~With Parisa Fowles-Pazdro as style inspiration, deciding on what to wear while somewhat difficult, was also a lot of fun. Even though I won’t be donning Chanel or McQueen, I will be adhering to my signature style and keeping it very simply luxurious. ~

Jennifer Aniston Moving to NYC

Just this past weekend on one of the new blogs I have discovered and fallen in love with, Hooked on Houses, I discovered that Jennifer Aniston’s newly renovated Beverly Hills home is for sale as she is looking to relocate to New York City.

At the time, the newly revealed photos in the March 2010 issue of Architectural Digest were very much anticipated (click here to see the photos). Having named the house Ohana which means “extended family”, Aniston shared her reasoning for wanting to sell:

“I couldn’t sleep and I sort of had one of those moments where I went, I really need to simplify… and clear out the clutter. And along with that thought came, ‘I should sell my house.’ … I had the realization that this is just too much for me. I’m not this person.”

Listed at $42 million, I wish the best for her, as I have always been impressed with what she does next as it seems to reveal her quiet strength. While it was rumored that she purchased a 4-bedroom duplex in the West Village, the purchase appears to have fallen through and she is still on the hunt.

Below are a few more images of Ohana and for more information on the listing, click here.

Vensette – A Brilliant Website For Busy Women

A savvy business woman, wise beyond her years, is tapping into a market and fulfilling a need for today’s modern woman’s busy lifestyle that provides quality, attention to detail and guaranteed peace of mind for the client when it comes to looking their best.

At 26-years-old, Columbia graduate Lauren Remington Platt has designed a business concept that has a very auspicious future. With aspirations of being the C.E.O. of an international fashion house (as shared in a 2010 Vanity Fair interview), Platt is already halfway there with her new business venture Vênsette.

As founder and CEO of Vênsette (the name comes from a combination of Place Vendôme in Paris and beauty icon Marie Antoinette), a new website for booking on-call talent (hair & make-up artists) to arrive at your doorstep, office, hotel, just about anywhere, and in 90 minutes to help you put your best face forward for whatever event, job interview, fashion show, party you need to attend, Platt has conceived an idea that while on the surface may appear as a luxury, is more often than not a time saver and a way to ease one’s mind during every woman’s busy and ever-demanding daily schedule whether she is a stay at home mom or a tireless professional.

Upon recently becoming a member of Vênsette (to request membership, simply enter your information here), I instantly felt at ease knowing that while in attendance at upcoming Fashion Weeks in New York I could have a dependable stylist at my fingertips in order to look my best (currently Vênsette is only in New York City, but is in the process of expanding to other major cities).

Having been recently interviewed and featured in The New York Times Magazine and March 2011’s issue of Vogue, Lauren graciously accepted my invitation for another interview to be shared here on The Simply Luxurious Life.   Let’s take a look at what Vênsette is all about as well as view some images of the hair and make-up choices that are offered.

Vogue US March 2011

What was your inspiration for tapping into this luxury/style on-demand market?

As a young professional female in finance, I was working long hours while also trying to keep a social life. I would often have to go straight from the office to dinner or a fundraiser and I realized there was no easy and viable way to get ready. I knew that other women, whether full-time mothers or full-time professionals, were dealing with the same issue.

How did you come up with your business plan and the concept of a visual hair and makeup menu?

I was inspired by the universal consistency of Starbucks. If you order a chai latte in New York or London, it is the same no matter who is behind the counter. Consistency is the most important element in building a client's trust in beauty services, yet it is often overlooked.

Beyond helping women look their best, what do you hope Vênsette services will bring customers?

The concept of the Salon is antiquated. Who has time to run around New York for a beauty appointment? Our clients are multi-taskers who know the value of their time and need to get beauty services when and where they want.

What are your goals for the future of Vênsette?

We will soon be expanding into other beauty services and launching Vênsette in other cities both nationally and internationally. Beyond that is a secret!

What would success look like for Vênsette?

Vênsette is definitely on mile one of a very successful journey. After such an overwhelming positive response to our site, I would say we are currently looking at a growing success.

What sources are you basing the hairstyle choices on - are there certain classic or modern style icons you gravitate towards when making these decisions?

When creating the hair and makeup menu, I consulted my favorite magazines, runway shows, fashion campaigns, and movies, and compiled a list of classic looks that I believe every woman needs to complement her wardrobe. One of our bestsellers, a scarlet red lip with a sweep of black eye liner, is named after Grace Kelly. The Audrey is a low bun inspired by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. One great thing about the hair and makeup menus is that they provide a common point of reference for the beauty artist and the client.

What are the choices of hairstyles, what do they look like, and which do you suggest for certain events?

On the Vênsette site, our styles are divided into day looks and evening looks. Each look can be edited to fit a client’s personal style. The Oscar, a French twist, is perfect for an important business meeting, but can also be slightly messy for a social gathering or fashion event. Our best seller is the Siren, a 1920's curl set. It’s a very romantic and effortless look, and a favorite among our clients for black-tie galas. Another one of our signature looks is the Classic Blow-Out. A client can make it loose and voluminous or more slick and chic, depending on her taste.

What can a first time client expect (time, itinerary, # of people), and what could they do to ensure the best experience?

In order to ensure the best Vênsette experience, we advise clients to relax and enjoy the process! One reason we created the signature hair and makeup menu was to remove anxiety about the end result; clients know going into an appointment exactly how their hair and makeup will look. Appointments are secured through an online booking system. Members first select their desired date, time, and location then choose their hair and makeup looks. Upon payment, an email confirmation of the appointment is sent to the client and a professional artist from our team travels to the client's location of choice. Hair and makeup are performed by the same artist for a packaged rate of $250 for day looks and $325 for evening looks. Both hair and makeup is guaranteed to be completed in under 90 minutes. Deluxe packages are also available upon request.

What types of day and evening events has Vênsette been booked to style for?

We have been booked for Fashion Week parties, New York galas, ladies’ luncheons, corporate meetings - everything, really! Our clients constantly need to look runway-ready whether it's for work or pleasure.

Has it been your experience that woman request Vênsette’s services for a simple day at work?

Yes! Some of our most valued clients request Vênsette multiple times a week before they go to work. Starting your day with the New York Times, a cappuccino, and a Vênsette pro doing your hair and makeup... why not?

Why not indeed! Below are a handful of images of some of the hairstyles Lauren mentioned (Oscar – a French twist, Tribeca – an elegant ponytail are not included, but worth mentioning as I would gravitate toward the Tribeca for a day look most certainly) and make-up looks as well.

The idea of creating a consistent and dependable product is a tried and true business concept that, in our busy world, instills confidence in any businesses’ customers. It is clear Platt has done her research on what women want, is someone who walks the walk with a very full business schedule, but still always appears stylish and pulled together as well as being passionate about creating something that is needed by the consumer. I look forward to trying out Vênsette’s services on my next trip to New York and want to thank Lauren again for taking the time to be interviewed.

Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2010

In the Lexington Avenue Armory in New York City, Victoria’s Secret Angels caused the temperature to rise more than a smidge with their annual Fashion Show on November 11, 2010. Airing Tuesday, November 30th on CBS at 10pm, you too will be able to see the show.  Below is a collection of photos from the show, the multi-million dollar bra, backstage, the performers, and the location. Click here to hear Akon’s “Angel” song and see a preview of the show.  I don’t know about you, but this is my motivation to find other ways to enjoy the holidays besides tasting every hors d'oeuvre.
