Jason Wu – Spring 2013 RTW

Jason Wu shared with the press that his inspiration for his Spring 2013 RTW collection came from an unlikely pairing of photographers – Helmut Newton and Lillian Basman. With two stark contrasts present throughout the show mixing femininity, which is has become well-known for when he debuted his first collection in 2006, and straight-forward leather inclusions with angular darts and expertly tailored waists and bodices, Wu demonstrated that he has a darker, mysterious ability adding a bit of naughty to his often prim collections. With blouses buttoning at the neck followed by leather belts, pants and dresses, he certainly played with the opposing ideas quite well. High-waisted match-stick cropped pants continued to be prevalent, and as my Editor-in-Chief, Melissa Middleton, shared, the hair styles were exquisitely coiffed and ebbed and flowed perfectly albeit held securely in place much like the fraternal ideas of his collection.

Jason Wu – Spring/Summer 2012

With a similar color palette as previous collections, Jason Wu’s Spring/Summer 2012 designs also included cotton-candy pink, bright yellow alongside his classic grays, subtle navy shades and sophisticated, modern elegance that revealed feathers beads and pearls. Said to have been inspired by “pop art”, Wu cinched the waists with narrow belts and ties, pulled back the models hair into messy spiky updos and sent them down the runway with bright tangerine lips as to incorporate a contemporary tone. Jason Wu – Fall 2011 RTW

One thing was made very clear Friday night in Chelsea, tailor, tailor and again, make sure you have a good tailor at the ready.  Jason Wu continues to establish himself as a consistent (view his Spring 2011 RTW collection here) creator of feminine, demure designs that impress a wide audience. With touches of embroidery and mixing tones of navy, gray, black and nude, he stays true to classic ladylike looks that looked pulled together and still reveal the beauty of a woman’s body ever so slightly.  Stated as  his "baroque meets sportswear" collection, which was inspired by a Robert Polidori book on the 25-year restoration of Versailles, cigarette pants, sheer blouses, his signature feathery cocktail skirts paired with collared, long sleeve tops layered with prep school sweaters, impressed photographers and fashion goers alike. Jason Wu – Spring 2011 RTW

Describing his collection as, “Expanding the word of Jason Wu,” he most certainly will remain in the minds of many a woman as they plan their spring wardrobe. Femininity reigned supreme with masterfully created trousers, blouses, belted strapless cocktail dresses and color combinations that were classic, yet innovative.

At the young age of 27, Wu’s collections are currently in one hundred and sixty stores and growing throughout Asia and Europe.  Looking to the seventies and forties as inspiration, as well as the vivid floral paintings of the Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes, his ability to skillfully clothe a woman’s body, yet at the same time create a mysterious allure was brilliantly demonstrated.
