Carey Mulligan – Vogue US May 2013

With the much anticipated Baz Luhrman’s rendition of The Great Gatsby set to be released next month at the Cannes Film Festival (May 10th), Carey Mulligan would make a sensible choice by Wintour as she (Wintour) has been close friends with the director since helping him launch Moulin Rouge by putting Nicole Kidman on the cover of Vogue (December 2000). You can read the entire interview of Mulligan found in the pages of Vogue by Tom Shone here and look for the issue to hit the newsstands on April 23rd.

As the sixth film rendition of the classic American novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald is set to debut, it appears it will be sparing no expense or detail as earlier released photos and trailers have shown (see below). And of course for the wardrobe, a detail I’ve been greatly anticipating as I adore the flapper, art deco era - Miuccia Prada was chosen by costume designer Catherine Martin to create over 40 looks inspired by styles from the Prada and Miu Miu archives.

The female stars of the cast, which include Vogue’s cover girl Carey Mulligan who plays the careless, fun-loving, fashion forward Daisy Buchanan, will be wearing ensembles intended to blend “European glamour, sophistication and elegance” revealing a taste of the luxurious eccentricities that the east coast aristocratic lifestyle was revealing a predilection for during the roaring twenties. Brooks Brothers has clothed the male cast which includes Leonardo DiCaprio (Jay Gatsby), Tobey Maguire (Nick Carraway) and Joel Edgerton (Tom Buchanan).

Having worked together before, Luhrman & Prada on Leonardo DiCaprio’s suit for Romeo & Juliet in 1996, Prada released four sketches prior to the film’s release. Click on each sketch to learn more about each design and its inspiration:

The film is full of star power from the cast, to the designer and even the soundtrack which is set to be available on May 7th. Have a look at the playlist below:

1. 100$ Bill - Jay-Z
2. Back To Black - Beyoncé x André 3000
3. Bang Bang - will.i.am
4. A Little Party Never Killed Nobody (All We Got) - Fergie + Q Tip + GoonRock
5. Young And Beautiful - Lana Del Rey
6. Love Is The Drug - Bryan Ferry with The Bryan Ferry Orchestra
7. Over The Love - Florence + The Machine
8. Where The Wind Blows - Coco O. of Quadron
9. Crazy in Love - Emeli Sandé and The Bryan Ferry Orchestra
10. Together – The xx
11. Hearts A Mess - Gotye
12. Love Is Blindness – Jack White
13. Into the Past - Nero
14. Kill and Run – Sia

Intrigued? Well, it’s imperative to understand the aesthetics of Baz Luhrman films. If you’ve seen Moulin Rouge and his rendition of Romeo & Juliet, you won’t be surprised; however, if you haven’t, be prepared for what I expect to be, while accurate regarding the basic plot of the novel, sure to include unique modern and special effect touches (i.e. the designs, music, scenes, etc) that enliven the screen and appetize your eyes and ears. Simply watch the trailer to see what I mean. Needless to say, so long as the classic tale is told, I can’t wait to enjoy it when it reaches nationwide theaters early this summer.

Have a look at the trailer:

Solo, Lochte, & Williams - Vogue US – June 2012

For the June cover of Vogue, Annie Leibovitz captures three top Olympic hopefuls – Hope Solo (women’s soccer), Ryan Lochte (swimming), and Serena Williams (tennis). With Opening Ceremonies of the XXX Olympiad set to begin Friday, July 27th, even Anna Wintour thought it best to bring a touch of what will be on display in London to the pages of Vogue.

Vogue’s go-to girl Karlie Kloss accessorizes with a handful of other Olympians, clad in design gowns, inside the pages of the June issue. However, how do you feel about Ryan Lochte’s presence on the cover? Being only the fourth man to earn the honor (George Clooney, Richard Gere and LeBron James were his predecessors), it certainly stands out from the standard Vogue fare, but it feels a bit like a Sports Illustrated issue.

Met Costume Gala – Red Carpet 2012

To many in the fashion world, as well as myself, the annual Met Costume Gala is the most fashionable and most anticipated red carpet of the year. Elsa Schiaparelli along with Miuccia Prada were honored at this year’s prestigious fashion event appropriately titled “Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations.”

With pops of Schiaparelli’s most coveted color – pink – showing up in so many of the celebrities and muses (Coco Rocha’s hair and ensemble, Sarah Jessica Parker’s Valentino full-coverage dress, and Karlie Kloss’s Jason Wu gown), the evening was abuzz with energy on this sumptuous May evening in New York City.

Anna Wintour arrived first, donning an updated Prada design of Elsa Schiaparelli's famously known lobster dress (the first time Wintour hasn’t worn Chanel to the Met Gala in six years). With Wintour’s arrival, the flood gates were opened and the designers, accompanied by their muses, as well as musicians, actors, models and celebrities and all in total just over 800 invited guests made their way up the lengthy red staircase to view this year’s exhibit.

Below are my picks for best dressed and most fascinating designs of the evening:

Rules of Style – Stephanie Winston Wolkoff

Meet a real-life Anne Hathaway’s character in the film The Devil Wear’s Prada. Stephanie Winston (Harry Winston was her grandfather) Wolkoff began working at Vogue in 1998 and for the next 11 years was the director of special events/manager of Public Relations whispering in Anna Wintour’s ear the names of all who were at any special gala. However, last year, she was appointed as the first New York Fashion Week’s Fashion Director (read The New York Times article about what her job entails here.)

With her years of fashion experience, a degree from Loyola University in Communications, manager of Client Services for Sotheby’s before moving on to the pinnacle of all fashion magazines – Vogue, Winston Wolkoff has been well prepared for the trials, last minute demands and society expectations.

Being the mother of three all under the age of nine, she takes to heart one of the most significant lessons Anna Wintour taught her, one can achieve balance between life and work.

And one of the other helpful bits of wisdom from Anna Wintour – follow your instincts - certainly paid off as she has brought the fashion frenzy to the public more than it ever has been before every six months.

Standing at 6’1”, she confidently stands in all of her height along with the heels she decides to wear on any particular day, and I must say, this confidence, this ability to say, yes, here I am, is something that caught my attention.  Below are a few more style rules that Stephanie clearly follows.

(Get to know more about Stephanie here and here and here, as well as here.)

View Your Body in Thirds

No matter how tall you are, view your body as though it were divided into thirds. Tim Gunn’s rule of thumb is to never cut yourself in half, but instead either elongate your legs (as Stephanie does above) or wear a dress that hits you around the knees.

Enjoy Wearing the Dress

In this beautifully stunning navy Vera Wang gown at this past year’s Costume Institute Gala, Winston Wolkoff stated that it was one of the favorite things she has ever worn.

Stand Up Tall

Find The Balance

Diamond Studs

While we can’t all be the granddaughter of “The Jeweler of the Stars”, we can conduct ourselves with similar grace, carriage and the respect of someone who is deserving of great success and happiness because ultimately we all have to make a name for ourselves and our actions really do hold quite a bit of weight.

Imitation Is The Greatest Form of Flattery

New York Fashion Week is in full swing and while fashion editors, stylists, writers and photographers take their seats, Anna Wintour (the editor of Vogue US since 1988) will be photographed almost as much as the designs themselves. In a Vogue Paris 2007 issue, the editorial below was created titled L’Icône, and the model with her classic bob, black sunglasses, and classically strung necklace imitates Anna’s iconic style quite well.

So while the models strut and stare, she sits, analyzes and deciphers what we will see in the future season. Imitation really is a great form of flattery.

Fashion’s Night Out Opening Ceremony 2010

The fashion, the stars, and the incredible official opening ceremonies of Fashion’s Night Out around the world kicked off with a CBS televised event September 7th at the New York Fashion Week’s new location – Lincoln Center.  Set your DVRs to watch the entire show Tuesday, September 14th on CBS.

The largest public fashion show in New York history, this event appeared to whet the appetite for all those who love and appreciate fashion.  Sponsored by Vogue magazine and Spec Entertainment, the event drew 1500 ticketed guests to the plaza at Lincoln Center.  One hundred and fifty of the world’s top models opened and closed the ceremonies which began with the arrival of the most well-known names in the modeling industry stepping off of a double-decker bus while the tune of “Empire State of Mind” played for the audience.

Fall fashions were on display as they were paraded throughout the many runways at the plaza. To read more about all of the designs and celebrities that were spotted, click here. All in all, it appeared to be an amazing night to be in New York, and I can’t imagine a better way to begin what is fast becoming one of the most magical days in the fashion industry. Have a look at a handful of images captured during this fifteen minute hurrah.
