Spring/Summer Weekend Travel Wardrobe

Here in the states, the long Memorial Day weekend is around the corner and with it an opportunity to shed maybe a layer of clothing, which means proper packing is a necessity.

What I find to be the case however, is in my excitement to get out the door upon Friday afternoon’s arrival is that I inadvertently leave a very important piece of my wardrobe at home. So hoping to save us all from those Homer Simpson moments of realizing that the most perfect pair of flats was left behind to complete the outfit we’d like to wear out to dinner while out of town if only we’d slowed down long enough to collect ourselves, here’s a fail-safe list to cover the necessities for a weekend getaway – whether it be for one night or many.

When making a list of what to pack, I always begin my list by starting on the outfit that I want to change into upon arrival from the clothing that is closest to my skin and work outward. Depending on exactly where you are going will change the list, but these essentials should do the trick. Typically for me, this much anticipated Memorial Day weekend is a casual affair with opportunities to enjoy a dinner or two out on the town, a few walks to burn those extra calories I’ll be enjoying and who knows what else in between.

Goal: Keep it simple. Stay away from complicated wardrobe ensembles, excess jewelry or belts. Think layering and classic neutrals and only colors that flatter your already beautiful skin tone.

Clothing:
4 undies
2 bras (one strapless)
3 socks
white button-up shirt
short-sleeve blouse
nautical top
pair of jeans/ankle or cigarette leg
optional pair of pants (chinos, corduroy, etc)
jacket
cardigan
camisole (layering)
swimsuit
2 T-shirts
simple jersey dress
maxi dress (if you’re hitting the beach)
comfy cashmere sweater
pajamas
robe (if not going to a hotel that already has one)

Be sure to follow Diane von Furstenberg’s packing advice and roll, roll, roll to avoid as many wrinkles as possible.

Footwear:
ballet flats
nude sandals
walking shoes (for strolling)
espadrilles

Accessories:
sunglasses
scarf
oversized tote
classic pair of earrings (gold & silver) that can go with anything
day handbag
clutch
watch

In no time, you will be well prepared for a leisurely weekend away. And if you do happen to be staying in a hotel, here is a great list on how to create a tranquil sanctuary away from home.

If there’s something that you never leave home without, I’d love to hear. Please do share.

Agreed, best to keep it simple with a bunch of pieces that can be interchanged. We used to go away...but now stick around, my son plays varsity lacrosse and they have practice over the weekend so its not even an option but we have dinner plans and going to a friends house for a bbq so its all good. Hopefully the rain will eventually decide to leave so we can really feel like summer is on its way!

I love that nautical top! This is a very helpful packing list, I will be referring to it when packing for my trip to France. Thanks!
