The Simply Luxurious Life®: When to Splurge, When to Save

When to Splurge, When to Save

Whenever I receive sample sale email reminders in my in-box, my shopping instinct gets a bit tingly and excited I must confess.  And the main reason is that top design houses are giving an opportunity to purchase potential investment pieces at shockingly reduced prices.

However, during the rest of our shopping adventures, we must make up our minds – what is worth spending a very pretty penny on and what is not.

The key to keep in mind is that the foundation pieces, the skeletal system of your wardrobe, should consist of quality fabrics and tailoring. These items, if you want them to go the distance and always look fabulous, are going to be pieces that will cost more, but will be worth it in the long run (remember cost per wear?).

On the flip side, those items that only are worn one season and never pulled from the closet again, or can look just as striking as a faux, are okay to scrimp on.

Below is a list of items to save up for and items to not break the bank over.  As always though, there are exceptions, so I have made a list of limbo items that might go either way depending on the situation.

Splurge/Investment Pieces:

jeans
dresses/skirts
suits
sweaters (cashmere)
coats/jackets – winter & seasonless
shoes (work, flats, boots)
dress pants
couture
bras
handbags

Limbo

panties
sneakers
exercise clothes
classic button up shirts
pajamas
vintage
scarves
jewelry
swimsuit
shoes (occasional)

Save

trends
t-shirts
belts
hosiery/socks
shorts

Do share what items I may have forgotten, as I’m always looking to learn from my fellow fashionistas.

Which category do you put purses in? I think that they should be investment pieces that will always elevate whatever one is wearing. Thoughts?

pasunejeunefille - I agree with you. I believe they should be an investment as well. I can think back over all of my handbags and none of the cheap ones I had purchased lasted more than a season. Something certainly worth saving for. Thanks for the reminder. :)

A lot of sandals as gorgeous as they are, will only last a season. Otherwise good shoes and handbag are a must!

Love this post! I rather buy one Chanel bag then two so so bags! On a different note, I love splurging on Chanel No.5 parfum but save by buying drugstore mascara!

By comparison, my 'splurge' list is very short... I would spend serious money on great jeans, and last winter I did splash out on a pair of purple leather boots, which I simply fell in love with and plan to wear until I die :)
Strangely, I love good quality socks and would happily spend more on those. For one brief season I owned machine-washable cashmere socks, and was in total heaven.
If I had oodles and oodles of money, my second luxury would be made-to-measure shoes. (The first would be a personal chef, but that's another story!).

I splurge on the classic transeasonal pieces-pieces that i can wear Summer or Winter so i don't have to spend extra money on season top ups.

Definitely splurge on handbags - Chanel bags- they are timeless - don't ever go out of fashion - it's an investment

I save on stockings, leggings, socks, T shirts, belts, hats, scarfs, dress jewellery and anything vintage - infact i don't buy vintage at all - i find vintage is a trend, they go out of trend and back in trend unlike your designers blazer or sweater they are in trend every season, every year.

Yes, definitely splurge on nice purses for quality purposes; one for every day use, a nice evening clutch and a fun weekend bag. This list is perfection, nice work Shannon! xoxo

Quality lingerie is an investment, too.
