It's interesting - the little black dress is supposed to be one of those wardrobe staples that we all should have, but I find it takes time to find a truly special one that you LOVE. Having a little black dress for the sake of it won't work if the shape is off, the cut is unflattering, the fabric isn't right, etc. I've had a few little black dresses in my closet before, having bought them thinking "perfect, little black dress!" but I ended up falling out of love with them because I didn't think enough beyond the idea to consider the other aspects of the dress and how it flattered me. Now I own one that I LOVE, but I came upon it by chance while travelling last year and I hadn't been searching for it. It basically has a black pencil skirt (a kind of ponte fabric which slims but isn't too tight) and a black silky halter top with small white polka dots on it. It also has a grosgrain ribbon at the waist that you can tie. It's a slightly less traditional "little black dress" but it's perfect for me. I've worn it to work with a jacket/sweater and out as well. I always feel fantastic in it, and that's the most important part - finding something that makes you FEEL fantastic, not just buying an item because you think you're supposed to have it. The dress pictured here looks like it would be very flattering.
