Beauty Money Saving Tips – Part Two

Last week, a mini-series began with frugal ways to continue your beauty regime as I shared two ways to maintain beautifully radiant well-moisturized skin. This week, I’d like to share a simple way for each one of us to pamper ourselves at home without buying any special products – the at-home facial.

Once a week, make a date to pamper yourself. Carve out 30-60 minutes, turn on your favorite music or television show and allow yourself to just relax. Maybe at the same time give yourself a manicure or pedicure while you wait for your mask to dry. Whatever you choose to do, I’ve gathered together the steps I follow when giving myself a facial along with recipes for making your very own mask from ingredients in your kitchen. By taking care of your skin on a regular basis (and if you can seasonal facials at a spa) your skin will continue to glow and be properly moisturize giving you the youthful look we’re all looking for.

At-Home Facial Steps:

1. Remove your hair from your face. Cleanse your face with a gentle cleanser.

2. Exfoliate with a gentle scrub. As shared last week, St. Ives Apricot Scrub works great or simply mix equal parts sugar and water for a very frugal and very gentle exfoliant for your face.

3. Steam. No fancy appliances necessary, just find yourself a large ceramic or glass bowl that is wider than your face (or use your sink). Fill it with hot water and place your face over the bowl with a towel over your head to capture all of the heat. Continue the steaming process for five minutes to open your pores.

4. Extract blackheads with a Biore strip or blackhead extractor, not with your fingers. I personally, skip this part and leave it to my facialist every three months so I don’t do any damage to my skin. Thankfully, if you take care of your skin regularly, you’ll find you won’t have to worry about this step either.

5. Apply a mask to your face depending upon your skin’s needs. If your skin is dry, apply a moisturizing mask such as honey and avocado (all recipes are below). If your skin is oily, apply a clay mask (I use Kiehl’s Rare Earth Deep Cleansing Masque – which lasts forever). And if you have normal or combination skin, try this pumpkin mask adapted from an article in Vogue from facialist Chanel Jenae of Santa Monica that uses pumpkin which has natural exfoliating acids and antioxidants (recipe below).

Depending up on the mask, keep it on for either 5-20 minutes. Ten minutes is always a good choice as it allows the ingredients to work, but not so long that it becomes tedious and uncomfortable.

6. Remove mask with a warm washcloth.

7. Then use your regular daily non-alcholic toner (my favorite for sensitive skin – Bobbi Brown’s hydrating tonic) or spritz water on your face, followed by moisturizer.

Recipes for masks:

For oily skin: Avocado/Honey Mask

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 avocado (mashed)
  • 1/4 honey

Directions:

1. Mix together and apply to face for 10 minutes.

For all skin types: Pumpkin Mask

Ingredients:
  • 1/2 cup fresh pumpkin pulp
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 teaspoon almond milk (for dry or combo skin)
  • 1 teaspoon honey (for dry skin)
  • 2 teaspoon apple cider vinegar or cranberry juice (if you have oily skin)
Preparation:

Purée the fresh pumpkin pulp into a thick paste. Add the egg (this acts as a binder). If your skin is dry, stir in a splash of omega-rich almond milk and the honey. For oilier complexions, instead stir in apple cider vinegar or cranberry juice. Mix well. Apply the mask, leaving it on for 15-20 minutes, depending on your skin sensitivity. Rinse with cool water and moisturize as usual.

For all skin types: Oatmeal/Honey Mask

Ingredients:
  • 1 tbsp oatmeal, finely ground
  • 1 tbsp live, organic yogurt (skip the flavored stuff)
  • A few drops of honey
Preparation:

Add the yogurt to the oatmeal in a small bowl and mix together.

Warm a few drop of honey. To do this, warm a spoon under hot water for a minute, then add a few drops of honey to the spoon.

Stir the honey into the yogurt and oatmeal mixture.

For all skin types: Egg Whites & Yogurt Mask

Ingredients:
  • 2 egg whites, separated from the yolk and placed in a bowl
  • 2 tablespoons of plain yogurt (Greek yogurt)
Preparation:

Separate the egg whites from a couple eggs and place them in a bowl. Add 2 tablespoons of yogurt (do not use flavored yogurt!). Mix them up and apply to face. Leave on face for a few minutes.

My New Favorite Snack

Last week, I trekked down to our local farmer’s market and had my eyes peeled for kale. I’d been curious to try the kale chips so many people had been raving about. And while I’m not a big fan of potato chips simply because they are so addictive (don’t get me wrong, they are delicious), I crave that feather light crunch and salty flavor ever so often.

I was in luck and one vender did have kale.  In fact, she thanked me for buying it (a tremendously huge bunch for only $2.00) with the most grateful facial expression as though I was doing her a favor which I found very telling.

Kale tends to be one of those very hardy, beautiful garden plants that many people aren’t sure what to do with. I know I certainly didn’t until I searched the internet and found some easy to follow recipes on Bon Appetite and Smitten Kitchen.

After arriving home, in less than 25 minutes, I was nibbling on the most delicious and healthy substitute for potato chips.  Light as air, delicately crunchy and full of flavor.

Here’s the recipe:

Kale Chips

Ingredients:

*1-3 large leaves of Kale – stem removed – leaves cut into just larger than bite-size as they will shrink in the oven
*3-4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
*Kosher salt
*Freshly ground pepper

Directions:

1. Preheat the oven to 300 degrees

2. Prepare the kale – removing the stem and cutting leaves into just larger than bite-size pieces.

3. place on a sheet pan lined with parchment paper (for easy clean up). Drizzle with olive oil and toss with hands so that oil distributes evenly.

4. Arrange kale in one layer on the sheet pan so (don’t stack). Sprinkle salt and pepper. Place in the oven for 20 minutes.

5. Remove from the oven and carefully with a spatula, place on paper towels to soak up excess oil.

6. Enjoy!

Claudia Schiffer’s Cashmere Collection

Who better to model Claudia Schiffer’s new cashmere collection made by luxury German cashmere company Iris von Arnim than the supermodel herself? Now available, Claudia Schiffer’s cashmere collection consists of sweater dresses, cardigans, scarves and cable knit sweaters ranging only slightly in color with grays, navy blues, blacks and shades of oat. Available at Net-a-Porter and other fine retailers, have a look at the video for her first collection – a little eerie, but Claudia still looks fantastic with her strikingly high cheekbones and mesmerizing eyes.

Based on her own style and life in London, Schiffer has always had a preference for sweaters in all sorts of styles – view her Rules of Style here. However, interestingly enough, she denies that this collection is way to remain in touch with her German roots. Either way, she offers up some classic styles that are sure to be luxurious to wear. Why Not . . . Get Organized? Part Deux

Putting yourself on the offensive and getting your life organized is a surefire way to place yourself in a position for great success when the opportunity presents itself.  Last week, the first part of the Why Not . . . Get Organized? series began by sharing the basic tips on laying the ground work for getting organized.

Today, I will share with you five systems to incorporate into your lifestyle that will save time, help reduce stress and put more power into your hands.

Stick to Your Grocery List
One of the easiest ways to disrupt your grocery budget is to go shopping hungry and without a list. While the first one is simple to alleviate, the second can be done more effectively than simply writing a list of what you need before going out the door. Based on the grocery store I frequent, the first few times I ever go, I make a note while I’m shopping of the number of the aisles and what is found in each. Then on my Excel program on my home computer, I make a list, labeled aisle by aisle of the typical items I might need. This list is copied and one is placed on my refrigerator so that I can circle the items as I realize I need them. There are many benefits to this approach, not only are you clear about what you truly need, but you save time because you know where to find things, and if you need to send someone else to do your grocery shopping, they will know exactly where to find everything on your list.

Have a Toolbox Handy
This tip is absolutely mandatory for someone living on their own, but even when you are married or living with someone, I highly suggest having your own toolbox as my mother still has hers and doesn’t have to rummage around through my father’s gadgets to find what she’s looking for. Purchase a simple small tool box to be placed in a cleaning closet or in your basement that holds the following: screwdrivers (flat and Phillips), hammer, needle nose pliers, wrench, electric drill, nails, hooks, twine, electrician’s tape, heavy-duty glue and anything else that you might need. By having your very own toolbox you’ll be able to take care of the minor things around the house and enable your ability to be independent.

Schedule in Advance
Nothing is worse than trying to schedule a necessary appointment at the last minute and realizing that nothing is available. Whether it is a hair appointment, doctor’s appointment before your new benefit year begins or a pedicure before you hop on the plane to your much anticipated vacation, allow yourself to be organized enough to know what services you will need to have done and schedule them well in advance so you have the pick of time slots.  An easy way to eliminate stress and potentially wasted money if you need to tip your hair stylist generously for scheduling after regular hours.

Consider All Transportation Public (Including Your Car)
For those of you who commute in your own vehicle, keeping your car clean, free of clutter and inviting to any passengers you may carpool around, makes the task more enjoyable when you have to spend significant portions of your day with your hands attached to the wheel. Consider your car a mode of public transportation. How do you prefer the subway, bus or Max to look when you step on board? Clean, sanitary and free of garbage and clutter instantly comes to mind for me. So each time you park your car in the garage, take out everything with you that you brought in that morning even if it takes extra trips. Plan monthly vacuuming, exterior washes and upholstery cleanings if necessary, and if you have children or dogs that tend to leave reminders of their presence, place a towel or seat cover over your seats to protect them. One more thing you can do to keep the garbage cleaned up while you are traveling is to have a portable garbage sack that wraps around the back of your seat or console for easy disposal when you come to the next rest stop. A welcome sight as you begin your day.

Do it Now
One of the easiest ways to keep your home, car, and office clean, thereby reducing a massive house cleaning session every week, is to pick up as you go about your daily business. Simply by taking your dishes and placing them in the dishwasher after each snack or meal, putting away the mail after it arrives (either in the recycling bin or its appropriate file), folding the blankets up after taking a nap, making the bed each morning and leaving the bathroom clean after getting ready to go out, you save yourself time that gradually accumulates and becomes ever more daunting preventing you from addressing it when you could have initially taken care of it in 2-3 minutes.

By following these few simple steps you will help yourself out, potentially saving money and reduce unnecessary stress and strain.  Stop by next Wednesday, when the series wraps up with the final few organizational strategies.
