This & That: No. 32

Films to enjoy and anticipate with great curiosity, a wonderful blouse for the holiday season and a sartorial idea that conjures memories and dreams of Paris . . .

~Lincoln – directed by Steven Spielberg

If you are looking for a quality film full of history, conflict and inspiration to enjoy this upcoming weekend, may I suggest you watch Lincoln which premieres this Friday, November 9th. Starring two time Oscar winning actor Daniel Day-Lewis as America’s 16th President, based loosely on the book by Doris Kearns Goodwin’s book Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln turned into a script by successful screenwriter Tony Kushner and directed by Steven Spielberg, viewers will walk with Lincoln after his recent re-election and contested battle with the House of Representatives to pass the 13th amendment to abolish slavery.

~French Women Don’t Get Fat & Hilary Swank

Some of you may already have heard, as it has been talked about for some time on the internet, but I was thrilled to learn from Mireille Guiliano’s website that Hilary Swank’s production company has bought the rights to turn Guiliano’s widely popular book French Women’s Don’t Get Fat into a movie. Believed to be released in 2013, keep a look out for the trailer soon as Swank is expected to play the main role of a Veuve Clicquot executive who shares her life lessons as a French Women creating a luxuriously wonderful life for herself.

~Slow-Cooker Creamy Chicken and Mushroom Potpie

One day while at work I discovered an old issue of Real Simple magazine, and the cover caught my attention as it captured a comfort food meal that begged to be enjoyed. A creamy chicken and mushroom potpie made with the help of a slow-cooker enabling you to prep it, leave it and return after work to a delicious home cooked meal. Yum!

~Trina Turk’s ‘Finch’ silk tunic in poppy
Last weekend was Autumn release in the Walla Walla wine valley, so after visiting a few beloved wineries and testing out a new one, on our way to dinner, I stopped into a wonderful local boutique and discovered a Trina Turk silk blouse that piqued my interest.

With the holiday season just around the corner, this poppy colored tunic would be stunning for work tucked into a black pencil skirt or a stylish decision for evening paired with slim trousers or jeans. The color shown on Trina Turk’s website doesn’t do it justice, so I wanted to share the photo I snapped in the store. It is rich, red and no where near the orange that it looks to be on the original website. Reasonably priced and a quality item that will last from season to season.

~Extra Info ~ For my fellow Oregonians, if you’re in the Portland area on Friday November 16th, stop by Mabel & Zora from 5-8 pm for the exclusive Trina Turk trunk show. (PS – follow me on Instagram here to see more photos from my day of wine tasting and more!)

~Equipment ‘Tegan’ printed washed silk dress

When I saw this navy print dress I couldn’t help but think of Paris in spring time or strolling the cobbled streets on rue Saint-Honoré. Equipment’s ‘Tegan’ printed silk dress evokes a simple chic style that would only need a beautiful pair of flats or sandals, a leather clutch or shoulder strap handbag and an excuse to wander. Drastically reduced from The Out Net, it is available in sizes S-L.

~Author David McCullough and 60 Minutes

Every once in awhile I will check to see who is going to be interviewed on CBS’s 60 Minutes news program, and this past Sunday, I learned that Pulitzer Prize winning author David McCullough was one of the guests. In a multi-part series, Morley Safer interviews McCullough as he takes Safer to the historic towns and cities that inspired some of his many successful books. This past Sunday, they were at his home in Martha’s Vineyard and Philadelphia, but next Sunday (November 11th), they will be in Paris as he discusses the book I thoroughly enjoyed reading this past summer - The Greater Journey: Americans in Paris. If you’re interested, I have a feeling you will indeed enjoy his dialogue and insights.
