The Simply Luxurious Life®: Why Not . . . Refuse to Underdress?

Why Not . . . Refuse to Underdress?

“I don’t understand how a woman can leave the house without fixing herself up a little – if only out of politeness.  And then, you never know, maybe that’s the day she has a date with destiny.  And it’s best to be as pretty as possible for destiny.”
–Coco Chanel

You know that woman who always looks impeccably stylish, hair brushed just right, trousers absolutely devoid of wrinkles and accessories that strike just the right balance?  And while you may not know her, your mind makes assumptions (even though we are told never to make assumptions) that this woman lives well, is comfortable in her life decisions and while not flaunting her happiness, exudes an energy that others wish to possess.

Without saying a word, a woman can set the tone of every situation she enters into every so slightly by simply dressing well and never choosing to underdress.

Even if you are only making a quick trip to the market to pick up a gallon of milk for breakfast in the morning, take a few extra minutes to pull on a pair of dark denim jeans, slip into ballet flats, a simple tee shirt and a classic trench. A simple decision that speaks volumes.

Here are a few of the benefits of changing out of your pajamas and lounge wear as soon as you begin your day:

 1. Set the right tone for the day ahead.

Just as running out the door in a disheveled mess does not bode well for a calm, serene day, so too does wearing a simple, classic skirt, cashmere sweater and fabulous heels, all with time to spare.  The latter example sets the tone of serenity and composure to help the day get off to a great start.

2. Looking good helps you feel good.

Even on those days when getting out of bed requires a forklift and PMS has begun to have its way with you and your mood, help yourself out by wearing a great outfit. While it may not completely assuage how you feel, it will help project the positive, pulled-together person you wish to be perceived as, so no one will know the difference.

3. Create your own luck.

Prepare to have a good day, and when opportunities arise to make it a reality, you’ll be ready to pounce upon them.

4. Demand respect.

How we dress communicates to others how we view ourselves and how we expect to be treated.  Dress professionally and appropriately and you are more likely to be treated in the exact same way.

5. Communicate without saying a word.

Similar to the fourth point, how we dress offers a glimpse to the world as to how we live, what we think of ourselves and where we would like our lives to go.  Make sure you are projecting an image you are proud of every day because you never know who might notice and be taking note.

Dressing well doesn’t require a lofty budget, but instead some ingenuity and an eye for style that works for your figure and routine. Always choose to treat yourself with respect (dress to demand it) and eventually it will be returned to you.

“You can never be overdressed or overeducated.” – Oscar Wilde

I remember a long time ago I found your blog and I really liked it, but then I forgot to check it daily. Yesterday I was thinking about real good lifestlye blogs, and it just came to my mind. And I am sooo happy I found it again, because what you write is truly inspirational and you are one of my 'role-model' in lifestyle blogging since I have started my own lifestyle blog as well. I like that you pay attention on the content and the text part because that is what I want to achieve as well!!

I ♥ the images and they tie in so well with the text. A great reminder to us all that it takes just as long (a few minutes) to appear disheveled as it is to be well dressed. Once again you impart words of wisdom so elegantly. Thank-you.

great post as always! a delicate reminder that by taking that extra moment each day to be thoughtful about ourselves we too can be just like "her" - that girl who always gets it right.

Great post!! All of your points are spot-on and true (that's redundant, isn't it?) We can't be reminded enough that how we dress is a choice--so why not make the clssy one! Thanks for saying it so well!

I totally agree....I never worry about being overdressed and it makes you feel so good......especially in winter when you can tend to get a bit lazy and drab.

Hallelujah! I totally agree. Unfortunately it seems we are outnumbered by the trackies and Nike brigade. Love your blog.

This post is lovely, but I'm not sure if it's possible to always look great. I knew some woman who cared too much on how they look, and forgot about the real sense of life - family, joy, being kind. And it can be frustrating after some time - caring all your life about looking at least good. Sometimes a woman needs to get rid of every duty (dressing well can be a duty if you haven't got this natural ability to look fabulous in first outfit you grab from the wardrobe in the morning) and just be. Sometimes you just have to give yourself a free day from caring about how you look. But of course underdressing cannot be a way of living!!! I adore your blog, Shannon. Thank you for running it.

I could not agree more. I consider it simply rude to underdress and aesthetically unpleasing to the eye. I do not want to see someone in their daggy trackies, ugg boots & hair mussed up when I go to the supermarket. But it seems that this is now acceptable. More dressing up plese!

Just found your wonderful site recently and I'm taking your advice to heart. I was alone this New Years Eve and used this time for reflection, planning (lots of ideas from you!) and I dressed up just for myself. Enjoyed my champagne, candles, nice dinner and I must say that I looked pretty while doing so. Feels nice and I am looking forward to a better year. Thank you for your website. I needed encouragement and you have given it. xxxx
