Rules of Style – Lauren Hutton
The wisdom brought with age is something that is a gift, but the accepting and embracing of one’s age is a sign of maturity and grace. Lauren Hutton seems to have taken her natural California girl looks and parlayed them well beyond what many might have expected. And I must say, she continues to impress and inspire me with her casual ease and seemingly genuine smile that just causes me to laugh along with her even though I have no idea why she is so lost in her exuberance.
This week’s Rules of Style is a bit of a peek into the past and a reveal of the old adage that states The clothes don’t make the man, the man makes the clothes. Lauren Hutton clearly is comfortable in her own skin and that, by itself, draws your eyes to her images. Let’s have a look at what Lauren can teach us.
Stick To The Essentials
Create a solid foundation for your wardrobe full of neutral colored dress pants, skirts, undergarments, t-shirts, LBD, items that can be mixed and matched in a variety of ways so that the number of outfits you actually have increases instantaneously.
Wear A Dress
(Vogue US August – 1966)
Diane von Furstenberg stated and Lauren Hutton demonstrates it. No matter how casual your lifestyle is, there really is something to be said for a woman who wears a dress, feels comfortable in it and has it tailored for her body. Own your femininity.
Be Confident In Your Own Skin
An outfit is only as stunning as the woman who is wearing it, and that “stun” factor truly requires the woman in question to feel confident about not only what she is wearing, but who she is. Whether you are taking a risk with your fashion or wearing a classic sheath dress, walk with your most perfect posture and look as if nothing could possibly get in your way.
Wear Color
Color can affect moods, so why not affect your own by wearing a shade of happiness, joy, love – you get the idea. Yes, black does have its benefits, but wearing color reveals more about the person in the clothes. Wearing color concedes the point that you are comfortable putting yourself out there a bit and are willing to have some fun.
Wear A Hat
Choose a fedora, a newspaper boy hat, a beret – whatever suits your fancy, but consider wearing a hat from time to time. It instantly makes the eyes pop and again, exudes a slightly elevated sense of cool confidence.
Flatter Your Feminine Figure
Halter necklines and V-necks are flattering on just about every body type, and you’ll see Lauren Hutton donning one of the two more often than not. The beauty of being a woman and as Donna Karan continues to remind us with her cut out shoulder designs is that we don’t gain weight in our shoulders, so when in doubt, show them off!
Own A Trench
A classic trench coat can carry you through more than just one season. It can double as a casual cover-up with jeans and flats or out on the town with a dress. A trench is a staple you will be glad you have in your coat closet when you want to look stylish and conjure up a memorable scene from worthy of Casablanca.
Relax & Smile
Part of being a stylish woman is flashing a genuine smile. Nothing is less intimating than someone who has a smile on their face, so be the winsome person that you are and flash those pearly whites. You never know who you’ll meet next.
Be Proud Of Your Age
One part of being comfortable in your skin is accepting the aging process and making sure any wrinkles that appear are ones made from too many smiles rather than the alternative. However, I know many dread this day, so start now, if you don’t already, taking preventative measures – moisturize like there is no tomorrow, eye cream at night, monthly facials, sunscreen and minimal sun exposure, and stop the trips to the tanning bed. Try an airbrush tan. Your skin will thank you later.
Use Your Talents As A Springboard
Lauren Hutton, now age 66, recently appeared on the cover of Love magazine in August, but it wasn’t just her pretty face that allowed her to continue modeling well past her prime. It took savvy. The lesson being, take advantage of your innate skills, blessings and abilities and built upon them, foster them and don’t just take them for granted. And, as Lauren demonstrates with her fabulous well-known smile, embrace who you are and flaunt it.

I would really like to achieve the natural and comfortable style of Lauren Hutton. Could you please tell us(women on a budget)how to achieve this style and where to shop? I have tried to find a good looking trench coat, for example, and have had little luck. Thanks so much for the tips. I have just found your website and love it!
I agree with the last poster, I'm 62 and in most ways I try to dress as if I am 19, the way I remember when I felt my best. Is there a class or school for us older women to learn how to flatter ourselves?
